The toolset
A 3D art toolset is the set of separate software packages an artist moves an asset through, from first sculpted form to final rendered image, with each package covering one stage rather than the whole job. No single program in common professional use does everything well, so studios chain tools together and pass geometry, UV maps and texture files between them. The stack described here, ZBrush, Maya, Substance 3D Painter, Substance 3D Designer, Unreal Engine, Keyshot and Photoshop, is the software listed publicly by Tomasz Strzalkowski, and it is a fairly typical combination for character and environment work in games and film.
What each package actually does
ZBrush
ZBrush is a digital sculpting application. Instead of pushing individual vertices around, the artist works with brushes on a mesh that can carry tens of millions of polygons, which is why it handles organic form, skin, cloth folds, rock and hard surface detail at a level of density most general modellers struggle with. Its place in the pipeline is early: blocking out shapes and then refining them into a high resolution sculpt. That sculpt is usually not the asset that ships. It is the source from which normal maps, displacement maps and a lower resolution game mesh are derived. ZBrush also handles retopology and UV work through its own tools, though many artists do those steps elsewhere.
Maya
Maya is a general purpose 3D package covering polygon and NURBS modelling, UV layout, rigging, animation, simulation and rendering. In a pipeline that includes ZBrush, Maya frequently takes over after sculpting: building or cleaning the production mesh, laying out UVs, creating the skeleton, and animating. Its strengths are breadth, a long established scripting and plugin ecosystem, and the fact that studio pipelines, asset management systems and file conventions have often been built around it for years. That entrenchment is a genuine practical advantage even where competing tools match it feature for feature.
Substance 3D Painter
Painter is a texturing application. The artist loads a specific model and paints directly onto it in 3D, working with layers, masks and smart materials that respond to the mesh via baked maps such as ambient occlusion, curvature and world space normals. Those baked maps are what let effects like edge wear and dirt in crevices appear automatically and update if the material is changed. Painter outputs the texture set for that one asset: base colour, roughness, metallic, normal and whatever else the target renderer expects.
Substance 3D Designer
Designer is a node based material authoring tool. Rather than painting one asset, it builds materials procedurally from noise, pattern and filter nodes wired together into a graph. The output is a material that is resolution independent, tileable and parameterised, so a single brick graph can produce many variations of brick by changing exposed sliders. Designer materials are frequently consumed inside Painter, inside a game engine, or in offline renderers. The learning curve is steeper than Painter’s because the work is closer to programming than to painting.
Unreal Engine
Unreal is a real time engine: it renders and simulates a scene at interactive frame rates. For an artist it is both the target platform, where lighting, materials and level composition are finalised, and increasingly a rendering tool in its own right. Materials are built in a node graph, lighting can be dynamic or baked, and the result is viewable immediately rather than after a render queue.
Keyshot
Keyshot is an offline renderer aimed at speed and simplicity. It imports geometry, applies a physically based material library largely by drag and drop, and produces a lit, photographic looking still or turntable with relatively little setup. It has no modelling or animation depth to speak of and does not try to have it.
Photoshop
Photoshop sits at both ends of the pipeline. Before modelling it is used for concept art, reference sheets and paintovers. After rendering it is used for compositing render passes, colour grading and portfolio presentation. In between it is still commonly used for touching up texture maps and preparing tiling source images and alphas.

ZBrush compared with Blender
These two are often set against each other, but they answer different questions. Blender is a free, open source, general purpose 3D suite: modelling, sculpting, UV, rigging, animation, simulation, video editing and its own renderers, all in one application. ZBrush is a specialist sculpting tool with a commercial licence and a deliberately narrow focus.
Blender’s sculpt mode has improved considerably and is entirely capable of production work, particularly for artists who prefer one application over several. ZBrush’s advantages tend to show at extreme mesh densities, in its brush behaviour and its long refined workflow features for detailing and managing multi million polygon meshes. Cost is a real factor and licensing models change over time, so it is worth checking current terms rather than relying on what was true a few years ago. There is no universal winner here. The reasonable framing is that Blender is a broad free suite that also sculpts, and ZBrush is a paid tool that does one stage in unusual depth.
Whether Painter is worth it, and how it relates to Designer
The two Substance applications are complementary rather than alternatives. Painter answers the question “how does this particular object look”. Designer answers “what is this material, in general”. An artist can use Painter alone and rely on the bundled and community material libraries, which is why Painter is the more commonly adopted of the two. Designer becomes worthwhile when the same material is needed repeatedly, when it must tile across large surfaces, or when art direction requires materials that no library provides.
Whether either is worth the cost depends on volume of texturing work. Alternatives exist, including Mari for very high resolution film texturing and Blender’s own texture painting, and hand painted texture workflows in Photoshop remain valid for stylised projects. Painter’s practical draw is speed: mesh aware masking removes a large amount of manual work that older workflows required.
Unreal beyond shipping games, and where Keyshot fits
Artists use Unreal for a good deal that never becomes a playable game. Real time rendering of architectural and product visualisation, animated cinematics rendered out of the engine’s sequencer, and virtual production, where LED walls display engine driven environments live behind actors on set, are all established uses. The common thread is that feedback is immediate, so lighting and layout can be judged as they are changed rather than after a render.
Keyshot occupies the opposite position. It is an offline renderer, meaning frames are computed rather than played back, and its value is a clean, controlled, physically plausible still image with very little setup time. For a single portfolio shot of one asset, that is often faster end to end than building a scene in an engine. For a sequence, an interactive scene, or anything where lighting must be iterated repeatedly, the real time engine is generally the more practical choice. Both are legitimate; they solve different problems.
ZBrush compared with Blender
These two are the pair readers most often ask about, and they are not really competitors: one is a specialist sculpting application, the other is a free all-in-one 3D suite. The honest comparison is what each is built to do.

Neither is the better tool in general. A studio pipeline that already runs Maya and Substance tends to add ZBrush for the sculpting step, while an individual artist or a small team may cover the same ground in Blender at no licence cost.
